September 18th Racing

September 18th, 1999 - The final race for that MARS series was at Wisconsin International Raceway. Mark had been out Thursday night testing the car to get it tuned up. During practice he was turning 19.9's pretty steady. During qualifying he turned a lap of 19.990 which seemed like a time to make the feature. Many cars got in 19.95 and lower which would force Mark to run the last chance race. Mark had the pole in the first last chance race which looked like Mark would make the feature from how he was running. He took the lead and continued to pull away from the field until around the half way point when Tony Strupp would take over second place. Tony looked to be gaining on Mark but they both started turning the same lap times. Mark would go on to win the Last Chance Race. Mark would start deep in the field for the first 50 lapper but quickly moved through the pack. He was picking them off one by one. At the end of the race Mark was in 7th place in which he would finish. At the conclusion of the 50 lapper Mark came on the radio and said "If we didn't have 20 more laps on these tires they would have had no chance." Mark had a great run in the 2nd 50 lapper but traffice was bad. Alot of guys running side by side and were racing hard. Mark was moving through the field but was running out of tires and would finish 10th. Not bad Top 10 in both races.
